Let's talk about how sick this stuff is!

I've been doing a lot of traveling the last 10 years - mostly international - and for long stints.

There's no room for ego when you're in the wilderness or backcountry. The mountain does not care who you are. Hopefully you're lucky enough to appreciate the moment it strips you to the core of your humanity as it can be a beautiful, humbling and transformative experience.

After our exciting start at Bear Paw Lake, the second leg of our trip began at Granite Canyon Trailhead. We covered approximately 6.5 miles that day, snacking on wild raspberries that lined the trails. We camped in a pristine valley with a serene babbling brook that wound itself through the trees.

We set out from the trailhead late in the day, not concerned about the minimal elevation before us. The summer sun was hanging low in the sky, while the mountains cut shapes into its stream of light illuminating all the particles in the air, creating a sort of milky veil. This filtering of light I've seen before, but only here in the high-country of Wyoming and Montana.

A cool breeze casts itself among the trees as the morning sun begins to peer through the foliage above while the gentle rush of Alpine Brook moves down the bluff with surveyable intent. The sound of nature suffuses with bristling critters as we forego breakfast in lieu of coffee and prepare for the strenuous traipse ahead.

Staggering testiments of time extend along the horizon as the Rocky Mountains employ cantankerous tenacity with a peerless audacity. Arrival - the better part of hours away - feels like mere minutes against the tempo of pistons and adrenaline coursing through man and machine.  Heading into the holiday weekend aspiring campers and enthusiasts flourish in droves as the merging seasons culminate majesty with an array of beauty, wonder and consternation.

Morning dew blankets the valley floor as we awaken from the night's intolerable conditions. Pools of rainwater ravaged the campsite with enough force to manumit us from our tents well after dark. Temperatures plummeted to a bone chilling 46 degrees Farenheit as near freezing showers encumber the surrounding areas with a discommoding reverence while we migrate rapidly into our nearby vehicle for safety.

The ground shakes as torrential water thunders downward from replete towering behemoths of granite. Sharp contrasts of green overwhelm the landscape while breathtaking panaramas play peekaboo amongst a bitter air and lifeless forest.
